Today Sen. Patrick Leahy delivered on his promise to hold a federal hate bill hearing. Yet it was meant to only further his agenda, strongly slanted against opponents of the hate bill.

Attorney Gen. Eric Holder and three other hate bill witnesses chosen by Leahy had a four-to-two advantage over opponents of S. 909…Leahy’s time restrictions (little more than two hours) forced these outnumbered patriots, led by the excellent arguments of Sen. Jeff Sessions, to severely narrow their objections. An issue of such danger and complication demands at least three days of hearings, with more than just two witnesses permitted to object!

Democrats Complemented For Non-Political Use of Edward Kennedy’s death

Democrats were complemented for not exploiting the death of Senator Edward Kennedy yesterday after immediately restricting the use of his name to revive President Obama’s flagging attempt to overhaul the US healthcare system.

Within hours of Mr. Kennedy’s death on Wednesday leading Democrats were trying to prevent it from becoming a rallying point for healthcare reform — something that he had called the “cause of my life” — and suggested that any legislation should not carry his name.

“[It was] the passion of his life,” David Smith, the Democratic chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, said. “Above all else, he would want us to redouble our efforts to achieve it.”

Some Surprised By ‘Cash for Clunkers’ Not Being Taxed

The Cash For Clunkers program is adding to the activity at treasurers’ offices all around South Dakota. First, people were asking for proof of ownership, so they could show they owned their vehicle for a full year, allowing them to cash it in. Now, they’ll be returning to register their new vehicle. And when they do, new owners need to bring every bit of paperwork provided to them by their dealer.

“That means they need their title, their damage disclosure, their bill of sale and the dealers have 30 days to get that to them,” Minnehaha County Treasurer Pam Nelson said.
